When we were in Miami last year we looked out onto the cruise port and spent many hours considering whether we should try a cruise.

Cruise holidays have a bad reputation of being for older people and known for the tannoy announcements and buffet restaurants. Sort of a holiday camp at sea, most people’s nightmare!

So we tried a Virgin Voyage cruise out of San Juan to the Caribbean and we were pleasantly surprised

The first thing that surprised us was the average age, according to the internet Virgins average age is 48 which is much younger than most cruise liners.

The facilities are out of this world with a world class gym, yoga classes, bars, restaurants and because it’s all inclusive there is nothing to pay for apart from shopping and alcohol. Most people have bar tabs from bookings which range from $300-600 per voyage.

The prices are very reasonable and the restaurants are pretty amazing for a cruise liner with lots of different choices (Italian, Asian, Korean, formal and quick bites)

The capacity is around 2,700 passengers but it never feels too full apart from sea days where all passengers are aboard.

Virgin has managed to grow mainly through word of mouth and when I meet fellow passengers they are typically on there third or fourth cruise. Pretty amazing because they only launched in 2021.

The staff are so friendly and because all gratuities are included there is no pressure to tip for service.

My biggest issue is the world view that cruises are for old people – it’s quite a preconception to displace. I always talk in marketing about following the world view is much easier but of course that’s not the Virgin brand ethos!
