I used to be a paid up member of the Terry Smith fan club, and I was an investor in the Fundsmith fund. I have read with interest that Fundsmith have now dumped their investment in Diageo. They did this partly because of some missteps, but also because of the impact of GLP-1s on the business.
I am no longer an investor in Fundsmith but think that the comments on GLP1s are quite interesting.
I would be surprised if anyone in the western world hasn’t heard of GLP-1s. These are typically marketed under the brand Wegovy, Ozempic, or Mounjaro.
I used to run and own a diet business. We were always worried about a diet injection or pill that would be widely accessible. Such a pill could suppress appetite and help people to lose weight.
GLP-1’s are available in the UK. For around £190 a month, you can get a weekly injection. This injection suppresses your appetite and can help you lose weight.
I have been using Wegovy for around 7 months. I started at around 76kg. Today, I am at around 69kg. That’s not a massive amount of weight loss. However, I have also experienced significantly less inflammation. I suffer from Psoriatic arthritis. I really tried everything to lose that last 7kg: dieting, exercising, and making major lifestyle changes and nothing really worked.
There are trials underway for other impacts from GLP-1s such as reducing dementia, heart disease and even alcoholism. I think I expect some impact on food consumption. This includes effects on the food industry, especially in terms of increased protein intake. Hopefully, there will be a reduction in junk food consumption.
I certainly think that like all lifestyle changes, there is a holistic approach. You need to think about strength training. Consider protein intake and increasing exercise. I am happy with the impact it has had on my life.
Although I am not a biohacker, there is some good information on the science in this YouTube video below
